Magical Greetings! You may have noticed that we have decided to change this newsletter to a Quarterly message. There are, however, weekly updates being broadcast via our Blog and we simply felt like a quarterly message would be appreciated and more appropriate.

Last months trivia question asked what is The Magic Castle?

The Magic Castle is a performance venue, restaurant and private club. A typical evening features several magic and sometimes variety arts performances, as well as a full service dining room and several bars in a nightclub atmosphere. A dress code of formal party attire is strictly enforced. Entry is only allowed to members and their guests.

The lobby of the Castle has no visible doors to the interior, and visitors must say a secret phrase to a sculpture of an owl to gain access, exposing the entrance to the club. Nightly, five to nine different magic performances are showcased in three to seven different theaters, with additional performances added on weekends. Magicians perform in several different theaters, including the intimate Close-Up Gallery, a larger Parlor of Prestidigitation, and stage illusions in the Palace of Mystery. Informal performance areas around the five bars give magician members the space for impromptu magic for guests and other patrons. In the music room, a piano is played by invisible "Irma," the Castle's "resident ghost," who takes musical requests.

Those under 21 years of age are not permitted during evening performances. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Castle hosts a brunch and performances which are open to adults and children. During brunch, the Castle's "Junior Members" (ranging in age from 13 to 20 years old) perform in the Close-Up Gallery.

Starting on Valentines Day, CBS and FOX along the coast will be airing magic tricks all week...performed by yours truly.

In fact, here's the entire schedule: "Magic Week" on FOX an CBS (http://www.KCOY.com) starting Valentines Day - I'm coining it as "There's Magic in the Air!":

• Watch a trick each hour everyday Monday, February 14th through Friday, February 18th:
5-7am on KCOY/CBS
OR
7-9am on FOX

• Watch a package from previously recorded 3-hour interview (don't worry, the spot will only be a few minutes!) just after The Mentalist on CBS:

Valentines Day boost?!
What is going on with my dating magic book?! It is flying off the shelves even more than normal this past couple weeks. I'm guessing it's due to Valentines Day... Last months trivia question mentioned that I used my hands in my first job before magic. Did you figure it out?

I'll get right to the point. I worked at U.P.S., United Parcel Service for 11 years. That's right, 11 years. I started right after high school and quite when I was in my late 20's. I did everything from load trucks, sort packages to drive full time. I will happily say to the world that my "boss" was very, very wrong about my "customer contact time". See, they would say that I spent to much time being nice or listening to customers... Yet, my numbers were an insane 28+ stops per hour. You do the math. That is relocating my truck, parking, unloading, delivering packages and waiting for a signature on average every couple of minutes for 10 hours straight. Anyhow, as you can likely appreciate, the use of magic and entertainment was key. So many of my customers would wait with all the packages ready to go just so they could see a trick! It was win-win! It's too bad my short minded mangers could not understand the lo nger term relationships and power at hand. Their abusive, controlling attitude toward hard workers made me quite. Now I make more in an hour than I made there in a week and enjoy every aspect of my job(s). Now there's some Rich Trivia you can take to the bank! Life is funny, ain't it?

Last months trivia question asked why is it difficult to film sleigh of hand magic for TV without exposure.

Misdirection does not work well on 2-D/flat/TV. In person, it is quite easy to get you to look at one hand while I "might" do something with the other. When watching magic on TV, it's easy for your eyes to go where ever they want. Also, eye contact works in person but not very well through TV when dealing with magic. Drawing you into the conversation is easy in person but difficult through TV. Lastly, you can pause, rewind and otherwise watch tricks again and again on TV these days. By watching every angle and movement, hand, gesture, placement, etc, you gain too much of an advantage by watching magic on TV. If the effects are related to mind reading, body language or illusions that do not require subtle misdirection, then watching on TV is just as enjoyable and safe for magicians. It's too bad because sleight of hand is so marvelous to witness in person. If it could be translated better and safer through TV, you'd see a lot more of it!

My newest magic and mentalism DVD came out in August. I believe it will be the biggest thing to hit the market yet. Last year, one of my DVDs was voted as #1. This will be better. Digital Film Festival Scavenger Hunt

Last months trivia question asked what entertainer has had the most tickets sales worldwide.

This was sort of a trick question since last month's trivia question was David Copperfield because it is David Copperfield again! He is known for doing 500 full shows a year! Yes, you do the math. That's not a lot of days off considering travel, set up, rehearsal, design, consulting, interviews and all the time it takes to count that money!

You let me loose at an NLF Hall of Fame VIP Party! You name it, they were there at Bridlewood Estate enjoying incredible food and entertainment. One particular giant named DeShawn kept coming back for more, but always left completely freaked out while dozens of others watched in excitement. It was truly more entertaining to see him run away than the trick itself!

Magical Week Indeed!
What a fantastic week or so of events from taking the Mayor of Beverly Hills to the Magic Castle to performing in DC for Pace Energy. I enjoy this huge variety of venues, people and events. It's a fun ride for sure! As strange as it might sound, one of my favorite moments was looking at the Obama's personal garden at the White House.

It should be no surprise to many of you that it is David Copperfield. However, you may find it interesting to know he's been in Forbes top 100 numerous times - among other prestigious lists. His earnings have varied from 30-90 million per year over many years.

If getting in a taxi, ask the driver if they know how to get to your destination address. If they say yes only because they have a phone or GPS, get another taxi! I spent an extra 30 minutes in Virginia back roads because the "GPS" told him to go there even though my friend on the phone insisted otherwise. I knew the moment he hesitated when I first got in the taxi, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt since my local friend gave him directions. Always trust yourself!

Last months trivia question asked what was the first magic trick I ever created or performed.

That is a "tricky" question indeed. See, the first thing I ever created might have been a playing card that balanced on it's end or an object that apparently moved by itself across the table. However, I was so young and had no magic influence at all and created this those things out of imagination, resourcefulness and trail and error. I was creating tricks, pranks and illusions without knowing it just to pass the time when I was about 8. Fast forward to college and the age of maybe 22 before I ever stepped foot into magic shop or ever saw a magician on television. I "performed" my first trick around the age of 23 while working for UPS. I'd mess with people on my route and get them to help load my own truck! Prior to college or my first and only other real job, I did not dabble in magic whatsoever. In college, I pretended to do what I guessed might be magical for my own entertainment. I created illusions and pranks to amuse myself but not to entertain others. I highly enjoyed creating a situation and sitting back and observing the results. I later learned I had created what people would pay top dollar to experience. Who knew!?

When hiking, it find it quite funny to see little blue bags where a dog owner has picked up after their dog. I am puzzled at why it is better to litter and leave a package like that than let a dog go to the bathroom in the woods. Please just make sure there is nothing on the trail and save your blue bag for the city!

Although I've been booked this month on programs all over the globe including Australia and UK, I'm most excited about being on the Mark & Brian Radio Show next week! Being on the west coast and listening to them since 1988, I've always wanted to be on the show with magic or poker. It turns out it took a book on dating to do it. By the way, Chuck Liddell is certain to come up in conversation since he was a wonderful contribution to the book with agreeing to do the introduction. He is fighting this Saturday in Canada against Rich Franklin. We are wishing him a smashing victory!

Snoop Dog fan? I'll be back stage tweaking VIP's on June 20th, 2010 at the Pozo Saloon. For details on tickets, check out the Pozo Ticket Site. If you are planning to come out, let me know and I'll look for you! Just last week, I saw David Blaine doing some backstage magic to Snoop and friends. Now I have big shoes to fill next week. It's amazing what happens in Pozo. Did you know that I was the first kid on the bus and lived out past Pozo? Crazy, small world we live in.

I've always wanted to do this prank as a magic stunt of sorts and finally saw this on TV recently. This had to make people's head hurt. Imagine someone dressed like a vampire for a haunted house! Enjoy.

Last months trivia question asked what is a "magician" and when do you become one?

This is sort of a continuation of last month's question of "Do you have to be born with special abilities to be a magician?" Many have struggled with the "title" of magician. Personally, I do not think one can call themselves a magician because they dabble in magic. Would you call yourself a MUSICIAN if you were just learning the guitar? Not a chance. If you are highly proficient in any realm of music or magic, I think you can then transition into a "magician" or "musician" and no longer be a person who is merely interested. Often, others seem to title us as such once we are perceived to "be" something on a regular basis. I'm sorry, but grabbing your first few tricks from a magic shop does not entitle someone to be called a magician! Magic has a weird ownership to it and beginners call themselves "magicians" the instant they start. It's a tough delima because part of magic in the beginning is buildi ng the belief in others until you posses the skills, understanding, control and abilities that truly takes many years to begin to master.

In short, a magician is one who understands and possesses a mastery of some form of magical art. You do not buy it and you can't simple become one if you love magic tricks. Some will argue that you must make your living at magic to be considered a magician. This is nonsense. Many unbelievably skilled craftsman out there do not do it for money.
