Last months trivia question asked what was the first magic trick I ever created or performed.

That is a "tricky" question indeed. See, the first thing I ever created might have been a playing card that balanced on it's end or an object that apparently moved by itself across the table. However, I was so young and had no magic influence at all and created this those things out of imagination, resourcefulness and trail and error. I was creating tricks, pranks and illusions without knowing it just to pass the time when I was about 8. Fast forward to college and the age of maybe 22 before I ever stepped foot into magic shop or ever saw a magician on television. I "performed" my first trick around the age of 23 while working for UPS. I'd mess with people on my route and get them to help load my own truck! Prior to college or my first and only other real job, I did not dabble in magic whatsoever. In college, I pretended to do what I guessed might be magical for my own entertainment. I created illusions and pranks to amuse myself but not to entertain others. I highly enjoyed creating a situation and sitting back and observing the results. I later learned I had created what people would pay top dollar to experience. Who knew!?

When hiking, it find it quite funny to see little blue bags where a dog owner has picked up after their dog. I am puzzled at why it is better to litter and leave a package like that than let a dog go to the bathroom in the woods. Please just make sure there is nothing on the trail and save your blue bag for the city!

Although I've been booked this month on programs all over the globe including Australia and UK, I'm most excited about being on the Mark & Brian Radio Show next week! Being on the west coast and listening to them since 1988, I've always wanted to be on the show with magic or poker. It turns out it took a book on dating to do it. By the way, Chuck Liddell is certain to come up in conversation since he was a wonderful contribution to the book with agreeing to do the introduction. He is fighting this Saturday in Canada against Rich Franklin. We are wishing him a smashing victory!

Snoop Dog fan? I'll be back stage tweaking VIP's on June 20th, 2010 at the Pozo Saloon. For details on tickets, check out the Pozo Ticket Site. If you are planning to come out, let me know and I'll look for you! Just last week, I saw David Blaine doing some backstage magic to Snoop and friends. Now I have big shoes to fill next week. It's amazing what happens in Pozo. Did you know that I was the first kid on the bus and lived out past Pozo? Crazy, small world we live in.

Last months trivia question asked what is a "magician" and when do you become one?

This is sort of a continuation of last month's question of "Do you have to be born with special abilities to be a magician?" Many have struggled with the "title" of magician. Personally, I do not think one can call themselves a magician because they dabble in magic. Would you call yourself a MUSICIAN if you were just learning the guitar? Not a chance. If you are highly proficient in any realm of music or magic, I think you can then transition into a "magician" or "musician" and no longer be a person who is merely interested. Often, others seem to title us as such once we are perceived to "be" something on a regular basis. I'm sorry, but grabbing your first few tricks from a magic shop does not entitle someone to be called a magician! Magic has a weird ownership to it and beginners call themselves "magicians" the instant they start. It's a tough delima because part of magic in the beginning is buildi ng the belief in others until you posses the skills, understanding, control and abilities that truly takes many years to begin to master.

In short, a magician is one who understands and possesses a mastery of some form of magical art. You do not buy it and you can't simple become one if you love magic tricks. Some will argue that you must make your living at magic to be considered a magician. This is nonsense. Many unbelievably skilled craftsman out there do not do it for money.

Last months trivia question asked if you have to be born with special abilities to do magic.

Yes!... and no. Similar to someone who can play the piano by ear, you have to be born with certain advantages. Some people have spacial gifts, others musical, others mathematical, etc. I believe to have an "ability" with magic, one is truly born with a higher degree of observation, intuition and problem solving. However, anyone can start learning basic magic today- even including misdirection and sleight of hand. To take the magic to a level that defies logic is another story. There is a big difference between a trick and magic. Just like the piano, any can start practicing today but only a few will every become accomplished pianist.

Being that today is April Fool's Day, I thought I'd share a funny prank you can do to the kids- Slthough, I'd only do this outside!

Last months trivia question asked if hypnosis is real.

I do get asked this question regularly at shows. I often ask if they have seen a hypnosis show. They often answer, "Yes." I then beg the question, "Do you think the hypnotist travels with those 20 people on the road? ...including your cousin that was in the show?" Hypnosis is very real but there are a lot of misconceptions about it. Interestingly, it is as real as you want to make it. Can you be forced to do something against your will? Not too likely. Can you be put into a state that can enable you to see things that do not exist? Easily. Can you be placed into a state which allows you to display skills or abilities you didn't think you had? I recently went out to the public theater. What stood out most was the sound of people opening and playing with food wrappers. "Hey, if you open it slowly, you just make noise longer!" When is someone going to create a paper that doesn't make so much noise?!... and when are people going to remember to open their food BEFORE the movie starts?

I went to a mixer recently and sat on a chair most the night observing people. I was shocked to see several women approaching people with a fist of business cards. I'd like to say it's because they did not have pockets- however, this was not the case as they had bags. It's quite an obvious mission with a fist of cards being dealt like cards that they weren't in the listening or buying mode... just the selling mode! What impression is left when being on such a determined mission? It can come across very aggressive and insincere.

Food for thought. As in poker, don't show all your cards!

Last months trivia question asked about my color memory.

Strange enough as it might sound to some of you, I can not remember the obvious difference between red or blue. If I tell myself something is red, I can remember that easily. If I saw a car crash, I'm capable of remembering the most detailed items that surprise the most observant type, like how many door dings - but I likely could not tell you the color of the car!

I have fantastic vision and am not color blind. In fact red and blue stand out most. I'm fascinated by this conflict.

Last months trivia question asked how long it would take to memorize a shuffled deck of cards.

Tom Groves Memorized the order of single deck of cards in 42.01 seconds, Jesus College, Cambridge, England, On November 3rd, 1994.

Now, get out a deck of cards, shuffle them and then simply say each cards name. "Ace of Diamonds, Four of Hearts, Six of Spades", etc. It will take you about a minute and that is without remembering the entire order. I use a mnemonic device (memory system) and it takes a while!

Need to get back someone for getting you? Try this one cent prank out. At the office kitchen or at home, take a rubber band and wrap it tightly over the extendable hose handle. You know, the pull out rinse hose to the side of the main faucet. (Some sink kits do not have one... so this might not work everywhere.) When the next person turns on the water, it will be diverted to the side hose... which has been conveniently been pointing directly towards them!

Last months trivia question asked how tall do you think you can make a "house of cards".

Bryan Berg has been known to have broken "seven or eight" world records for card-stacking. He currently holds the world record for tallest house of cards, a 25 foot 9 7/16 inch (&Mac197;7.87m) tall "skyscraper" completed at the State Fair of Texas on October 14, 2007. He also holds the record for the largest house of cards, a category Guinness invented for the event, for a replica of Cinderella's Castle at Walt Disney World.

I've stacked cards and I think I've used a few decks and made it to about 5 feet.

This time of year brings many holiday parties which are private and very few corporate or public events. I'll be doing Chuck Liddell's 40th birthday bash and a 2-day casino holiday party in the mix of a huge string of private events. I'll catch you next year! Happy Holidays!

I'm excited and sad to say that my "little" is now 6 foot tall and turning 18 this week. It has been a wonderful accomplishment for us both. I'm sure we will stay in touch forever, but just not officially though BBBS. Josh has dove feet first into wrestling, debate clubs, drama, leadership, waterpolo and much more. He even enrolled into the mentoring program BBBS has where high school students mentor junior high students once a month!

Here's a simple bar bet for you! Put a drink on the table and cover it completely with a napkin on top and on all sides so the drink is out of site. Bet someone you can drink the contents of the glass without touching the napkin. When they take the bet, act as if you are doing something "mysterious" and pretend that you have somehow done it... they will think that perhaps you even placed an empty glass under there! Tell them that you have succeeded and to check. When they remove the napkin to see if you have actually done it, quickly reach over and take the glass and drink it!

You might have to argue that you said, "I will not touch the napkin!";) Keep in mind that this "scam" can be tweaked to work with other objects and situations as well.

Last months trivia question asked how far can a playing card be thrown. Rick Smith Jr. threw a standard playing card 216 feet, 4 inches at Cleveland State Convocation Center, Cleveland Ohio on March 21, 2002!

I'll be at the United Methodist Church the day I return from Ohio on November 14th in San Luis Obispo for a special event for National Adoption / Social Services.

I'll be at various locations for the Digital Film Festival in Paso Robles. Some of the events are private and some aren't. Last year, Kevin Bacon and Clint Eastwood and son Kyle were some big hits for fans.

Otherwise, everything is pretty much private as usual!

How about those people that shoot nose first into your parallel parking spot because you have pulled up to BACK IN correctly? Yikes! I see that everyday and it does make me laugh. Even if the person in front does not have the blinker on, it should be pretty clear what's going on... but apparently it doesn't! I do get a kick out of the 20 point turn to readjust the vehicle once they are "in" the spot nose first!

My newest DVD "Serial Biller" released last week exclusively through Ellusionist. I was on tour with Full Tilt Poker.net in Germany and Austria for the 2009 Euro Challenge. Performing on stage for thousands on jumbo screens was a blast! I was brought in to put on workshops on handling Poker Chips and similar skills. "Chip Tricks" were a huge hit as hour after hour, the seminar was full of fun poker fans learning something from easy to advanced. Pictured below are shots from one of my stage performances, shots from the Chip Tricks Corner Seminars and me with the host Thomas Sauermann. Also, this was the world debut of my newest Playing Cards (shown during a trick on stage.)

The event was a smashing success and amazing fun for all. In Hamburg, Germany there were about 10,000 poker fans playing, watching seminars and watching the pros. It was amazing to come out onto stage throwing cards into the crowd and then performing sleight of hand for an entire arena! We also moved onto Salzburg, Austria where the tour continued and I did another all day workshop on Chip Tricks. My camera men, the staff at Obsessions, the hosts, the fans and both helpers were all superb. I could not have asked for a better event.

Here's a very simple trick you can do within seconds. Have someone take out two different coins. Agree on which is "most unique" or valuable. While your back is turned, tell them to hide a coin in each hand and not let you know which is which. Now instruct them to hold the unique coin up to their forehead and really concentrate on it. Tell them to try to remember details like scratches, the date and designs. After a little bit of time, have them drop their hands next to each other and have you turn around. You can tell them which coin is in either hand!

How? The hand that was holding the coin at the forehead will be slightly pale due to the loss of blood. You need to turn around and immediately glance at the hands. Then, not making a big deal about the hands at all, focus more on them and ask "questions" as if you are trying to get into their head. After a few moments, tell them where each coin is.

Last months trivia question asked what's the Most Expensive Deck of Cards..

The highest price paid for a deck of cards is $143,352 purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City at Sotheby's in London, on December 6, 1983. The cards, circa 1470-85, are believed to be the oldest known complete hand-painted deck.

How far can a playing card be thrown?

Cell phones and yelling....

If you must talk on your cell phone around me, stop yelling on it! How many times have you seen this? Besides, when did it become okay to be yacking while in line, in stores and in restaurants?

Tip - The device is designed to transmit your voice at a REGULAR volume... just because you can not hear them well does not mean you have to yell for the everyone to hear:)

The San Luis Obispo County Map and Visitors Guide is now out. Pictured on the cover is yours truly, my wife Traci and child actress Lela! It was a fun afternoon filming and shooting while hiking beautiful Madonna Mountain. Next year, we'll be on the cover of the business directory as well! Central Coast Talent, kids and Big Brothers Big Sisters gets huge exposure! If you did not know it, I just finished a community talent show benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters. We made the front page of SLO City News & got major event coverage from KSBY/NBC during the show! These kids look amazing- looks like shots from American Idol! That's the quality from Christopher at Tolosa Press for you!

I just had a good conversation about "shifts" in behavior. Be it sales, poker or life, people show signs of "shifts" when making big decisions or being put in tough situations. For instance, if someone is proposing something to you and their feet move forward, they are revealing a sign of comfort and confidence... They think they "got you." However, if their feet shift back (especially if they curl around chair legs), they are showing signs of fear or uncertainty. It is amazing how direct some signs can be! Watch for general body language postures and see what "shift" takes place under stress.

Last months trivia question asked what the difference is between Bicycle cards, regular cards, paper finishes, etc. (By the way, check out our new Playing Cards!)

You'd be blown away at the variety of cards out there. As far as quality goes, there are indeed finishes that make dealing cards or performing magic better. If you feel the surface of a kiddie deck of cards, you'll notice they are smooth like a glossy business card. They tear easily, dent easily and do not shuffle well. If you look at Bicycle cards, you'll notice that the cards have an embossing pattern all over them. This helps the cards slide across each other. "Air cushion finish" is a must for spreading, fanning and dealing smoothly. Any cards will work, but triple layer, satin finish and embossed cards do the job right! Next time you are getting cards, buy a deck of RF Cards or buy other United States Playing Cards and see how well they hold up.

Did you ever notice the size of cards? Hold some generic cards next to casino, Bicycle or similar cards. You'll notice that they are 1/4" difference in width! Casinos, magician and card experts only use full size cards with high quality finishes. It makes a big difference in response, feel, longevity and more.

Europe, here we come! I'll be on tour with Full Tilt Poker for a couple weeks at the Exhibition Center in Hamburg, Germany and the Salzburg Arena, Austria. It will be quite a big showcase of Chip Tricks during my lessons to pros and non-pros all over Europe. I'll be showcasing some magic on stage for thousands of Germans and Austrians over two weeks. Check it out online or sports tv channels. I'll try to grab some poker tournament highlights and add them next month.

What's been the most expensive deck of cards?
